==============================

When you learned that your friend get the visa for working holiday, when you heard of someone decisively quit his job and travel for half an year, when you read in a magazine that someone spent thousands of dollars to travel around the world, when you saw a book of a young woman’s hitchhiking journal from China to Europe...did you question yourself, ‘My God? What am I doing? Why am I just sitting here?’ Don’t be scared! There are actually billions of people doing the same thing as you in the world. However, people around are keep telling me to wake up and stop day-dreaming.

Where can I find the one who share the same dream, dream of journeys?

One day, I wanted to find a quiet and little place to plan for a trip I was about to make, but I drew a blank; there wasn’t any idea in mind to go. I thought of the Starbucks or Pacific Coffee at the street corner, but they were too noisy and crowded. I could go to a small quiet cafe, everyone would chat about different topics, and there might not be computers for me to do research. I could go to the library, there are lots of traveling books, but the stiffness and silence could really put out my desires for travelling. I could go to a friend’s place, everyone could chat freely, but there wouldn’t be good coffee... at this moment, I thought of something more terrifying --- my friends all lead busy lives, some for their family, and some for their career… Who can spend the time for putting on a backpack and starting a journey with me? I understand that traveling alone is not as lonely as one would imagine, but, human beings are pack animals after all.

People in Hong Kong always think of leaving behind the hectic work and travel around because of the stressful life. In recent years, the trend of backpacking has been brewing, and before we go on trips, we always need a place to sit down and make plans. I could hardly find a related place to do so in our city. By related, I mean a place that is overwhelming travel atmosphere: a big bookshelf with over a thousand traveling guidebooks for guests to flip through freely; a place to share the same dream, in good fortune, professional travelers or backpackers gather and share the world information, and make their next trips better; a place to meet strangers with the same likes and dislikes, then we can organize a round-Taiwan cycling trip, or a team to go to the Machu Picchu in South America; a bar table with great coffee, top beers, with a 3m X 2m world map hung on the wall, with Chan Yi Ching’s song《Meaning of travel》playing in the background, with a lamp at every table, so that our guests can work on their own journeys.

It is true that in Hong Kong, where traveling desires are so strong, never got such a place I just described, a place for traveling enthusiasts and backpackers to gather, a place with a traveling theme.

That day, at last, I stayed at home and went nowhere.

It shouldn’t be like that. And if that’s the case, let us start the first cafe restaurant with a traveling exchange forum in Hong Kong.

“The Alchemist Cafe Bistro” was thus founded.
